Henry is working as a P.I., and Georgie's brother hires him to investigate threats being made against her as she moves to expand her business. I wish we saw more of this in a genre where wealthy philanthropists often get fanfare over doing the bare minimum. The story notes that she doesn't deserve applause for basic human decency, but it still stands out as a worthy effort in a world where few make one. Since Georgie was freed from her late husband's grasp, she has taken over a textile factory with the aim of listening to and respecting her workers, not least of which includes improved wages and childcare. The romance is a second chance for widow Viscountess Georgiana Fox and retired naval intelligence officer Captain Henry Harris. Also, while we have a straight, white couple at the helm, we do have significant side characters who are people of color and a casually sapphic couple. How I love when historical romances manage to stay relevant and thoughtful about the societies they portray. She also takes well-aimed shots at the British Empire and the nasty mindset behind colonialism throughout the story. But of course, I expect nothing less from Emily Sullivan. Early on in The Hellion and the Hero, readers are treated to some anti-police and pro-workers' rights vibes (particularly for women working in factories), so it's off to a great start.

Fursey was probably a royal prince himself, son of Finlog of Munster, and entered the religious life at an early age under the care of St Brendan. The Irish sent out many missionaries to the Anglo Saxons until the Synod of Whitby in 664, when Roman Christianity trounced so-called Celtic Christianity in what would become England (at least that’s the story we think we know – as ever the truth is probably a lot more complex). But, in this blog I have a little more freedom, so here he is.įursey was an Irish monk, one of the other team to Felix, who was a member of the Roman mission. So, you won’t find a retelling of Fursey’s experiences in Suffolk Folk Tales, but rather in Hugh Lupton’s Norfolk Folk Tales. The change came with the extensive local government reorganisation of 1974 that included a lot of controversial county moves – such as the rather shocking move from Yorkshire to Lancashire of my husband’s home village! Simon Knott’s Norfolk Churches website says the parish was ‘unfortunate enough to be dragged into the northern county’ – but I’m saying nothing, having lived in both Suffolk and Norfolk… I made a decision in writing the Folk Tales book to stick to the modern county boundaries for my tales, so as not to tread on the toes of my fellow writers in Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex. So why St Fursey? Isn’t he a Norfolk Saint? What place does he have in this Suffolk blog? Well, Fursey was based at Burgh Castle just over the border in what is now Norfolk, but was in Suffolk during my lifetime (just!). HE IS TRULY AN ARTIST AND THE BEST AT WHAT HE DOES. SOME ARE DOWN RIGHT GOOD, FOR EXAMPLE THE POE CLASSICS. I HAVE SEEN MANY OF HIS FILMS AND MOST ARE HILARIOUS AND ENTERTAINING. I HAVE READ OTHER BOOKS ABOUT THIS FASCINATING GUY AND THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST. ROGER CORMAN AKA, KING OF THE B'S DOES A GREAT JOB TELLING THE READER HOW HE PRODUCED AND DIRECTED MANY MANY FILMS ON A DIME STORE BUDGET. GREAT READ FOR ALL B MOVIE AND HORROR FANS It's an autobiography, which was still interesting, just not what I was expecting. Given the title, I was expecting more of a movie making manual type of book like "Make Your Own Damn Movie" by Lloyd Kaufman. Corman teaches, as well as delights".-"Choice". It's late April in an English village and unseasonal snow is falling on a cottage: "It falls on the thatch, concealing the moss and the mouse damage, smoothing out the undulations, filling in the hollows and slips, melting where it touches the bricks of the chimney. The opening pages of the novel are chock full of glorious descriptive language. Children's books often redeem them with some lesson about how outsiders are just like everyone else, despite their strange appearances or ramshackle houses or mysterious actions.īut how often, in our stories, are oddballs allowed to remain exactly who they are? How often do they take center stage as main characters and reorient our view of what is "normal"? How often are such characters given rich, complex, and interior lives, complete with sorrows, talents, opinions, and flaws? Claire Fuller's new novel, Unsettled Ground, does just that. Fairy tales sometimes cast them as witches, or as beautiful young royals cursed to live as beasts. Every small town (and every neighborhood in every city) has its oddballs, the people who live on the fringes, a little out of step with everyone else. In addition to the basic Lutheran two kingdoms doctrine, which Calvin articulated in the 1536 edition of the Institutes, Calvin gradually articulated an understanding of the spiritual government of the church in distinction from the political government of this world. It was Luther who said that a Christian prince is a rare bird in heaven.Īlthough the two kingdoms doctrine is often associated with Lutheranism, it actually played a crucial role in Calvin's thought as well. He believed that believers are to live in love to their neighbors as servants of Christ, though in a manner compatible with their earthly vocations. To be sure, contrary to popular impressions, Luther did not believe Christians could live and act as if they were not Christians in the affairs of this world. Third, Luther often spoke of two realms, by which he meant the outward realm of the body and life in this world, and the inward realm of the eternal soul. Second, he spoke of two governments appointed by God to govern the world in which these two groups of people are mixed together: coercive government by the sword to maintain peace and basic justice in the world, and spiritual government by the word and Spirit to gather men and women into Christ's kingdom. First, building on Augustine's two cities doctrine, he distinguished between those who serve God and those who serve the devil. Luther tended to talk about the two kingdoms doctrine in three different ways. |
